PURPOSE

Poutama was proud to partner with MBIE to deliver the Poutama ki te taumata: Accelerating Māori enterprise development programme.

The programme utilised $5 million from the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) and made this pūtea/funding available to existing regional Pakihi Māori/Māori business across Aotearoa New Zealand.

The funding support was for capital investment to increase productivity, increase job numbers and allow businesses to invest in regional economic development initiatives like construction and infrastructure.

Given the economic impacts of COVID-19, the programme had a strong focus on supporting enterprises that created new jobs, and in turn positively contributed to local and regional community resilience.

ELIGIBILITY

Poutama ki te taumata was available to regionally-based Māori business/Pakihi Māori across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Eligible Pakihi Māori needed to demonstrate the following capabilities: an ability to infuse tikanga and mātauranga Māori into their enterprise, as well as show potential to scale, diversify, innovate, export and transform.

The capital funding approved to Pakihi Māori was targeted towards scaling up and growing their business (rather than covering operational expenses such as wages and rent).

Approved capital funding could be used to help with the purchase of goods (e.g. equipment, tools, machinery) and services (website and app development).

Four Pakihi Māori briefly share their story and what this funding/capital has meant to their business in terms of impact, future plans and business growth.

  • Poutama delivered $4.6 million in PGF funding to 74 regionally-based pakihi Māori.
  • Poutama-Kānoa investments come from a cross-section of pakihi Māori from several industries, including: 39% allocated to businesses in construction; 10% in agriculture; 9% food & beverage; 8% forestry; 7% in trades and 6% in aquaculture.
  • Forecasted job creation totals 254 jobs, the highest number of jobs are in construction (90 jobs), forestry & agriculture (31 jobs each). Regions to benefit from this employment were Bay of Plenty (62 jobs), Northland (55 jobs), as well as Kapiti/Horowhenua & East Coast (25 jobs each).
