Masters Scholarship for Innovation in Science

Supporting and encouraging masters level study by Māori in the sciences.

The Sir Hugh Kawharu Scholarship for Innovation in Science, administered by Royal Society Te Aparangi, is a $10,000 scholarship for study at masters level in the sciences.  The Scholarship is applicable across a broad range of science disciplines including the physical, mathematical and computational, earth, environment, marine, social, health, biological, biomedical, human, and behavioural sciences.

Applications for the 2020 scholarship are now open.  Closing date is 2 September 2019.

The purpose of the Scholarship is to support and encourage masters level study by Māori in the sciences.  The Scholarship is applicable across a broad range of science disciplines including the physical, mathematical and computational, earth, environment, marine, social, health, biological, biomedical, human, and behavioural sciences.

Guidelines

Applicants must complete the application form, with a brief personal statement (maximum 300 words) addressing the objectives of the Kawharu Foundation and how the Kawharu Scholarship would assist them towards achieving their career goals.  Applicants will also need to provide an academic transcript and provide a reference from an academic supervisor, lecturer, or community leader, who can attest to their abilities.

Applicants must also meet the eligibility criteria below.

Each Scholarship recipient will be required to provide a progress report after completion of the first six months of their studies.

Eligibility

To be eligible applicants must:

  • be enrolled full-time in a one or two year masters degree in a science discipline; and
  • be persons of Māori descent able to explain their tribal connections.

Applicants suitability for the scholarship will be assessed on:

  • academic excellence and the potential to succeed in the chosen area of study;
  • leadership ability and integrity, including the respect of peers; and
  • potential contribution of the field of science to Māori social and/or economic development.

Applicants will need to complete the Sir Hugh Kawharu Masters Scholarship for Innovation in Science Form, and the relevant supporting documentation.
