Ben Marr & Jess McMillan – Tūhoe, Ngāti Rangitihi, Te Whānau a Apanui

Āio Media was proudly co-founded by Ben Marr, from Whakatāne and Jess McMillan who was born and raised in Owhata, Rotorua.

Āio Media is now in its third year of operation.  After being inundated with requests, both Ben and Jess left their full-time jobs to focus on managing and taking on projects they would otherwise have had to decline.

They create engaging video and digital content for various purposes, including corporate and promotional campaigns.  From corporate events to advertisements, they provide comprehensive services in videography, photography, and podcast production.

Their team specialises in end-to-end guidance, from conceptualising an idea to script development, tikanga and cultural advising, and supporting the live push and marketing of a project.

Jess says, “Being based in the Bay of Plenty has significantly contributed to our success.  Growing up in places like Rotorua and Whakatāne, where culture and tikanga are integral to daily life, has provided us with a unique perspective and the ability to connect with diverse cultures.”

This foundation enables them to approach projects with respect and understanding, especially in spaces where cameras might not typically be welcome.  Additionally, Rotorua’s central location facilitates easy connections to nearby areas like Tauranga and Whakatāne, helping them expand their services across the Bay of Plenty and beyond.

Recent funding from Poutama will enable Āio Media to enhance their skills, expand their service offerings, and invest in additional camera equipment and digital storage as they take on larger-scale projects.

Jess says, “Being Māori is central to how we operate, shaping our business relationships and interactions within our communities.  Our values naturally align with Māori organisations, fostering enduring partnerships and shared growth.  A significant part of our mahi supports the revitalisation and normalisation of te reo Māori.”

By collaborating with kaupapa Māori initiatives, the eye-catching and engaging content they produce showcases the quality of their work, standing proudly alongside larger non-Māori production companies.

Jess says, “While we’ve had the privilege of working with high-profile clients like Stan Walker, we remain accessible to everyone.  Our approach is recognised as fresh, innovative, and slightly edgy, setting us apart in the market.”

As a dynamic and forward-thinking team, they are constantly refining their skills and embracing new technologies.  “By staying ahead of the curve with the latest editing trends and cutting-edge equipment, we ensure that the quality of our work stands out above the rest”, says Jess.

“Our books are open and we are accepting projects for the 2nd quater of 2025 and beyond.”
