Capturing the Local Spirit
Alex & Moana Miller – Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Tūwharetoa & Te Pare o Hauraki
Nestled at the base of Maunga Ngongotahā, with the Waiteti awa flowing gently by, you’ll find Te Whare Piringa—the creative hub of Local Gecko Productions (LGP) in Rotorua. This is where stories come alive through an indigenous lens, led by Alex & Moana Miller and whānau.
Born in 2020, just months after the nationwide lockdown, LGP started as a bold idea to tell Rotorua’s real stories—not the headlines about crime or homelessness, but the vibrant culture, whānau, and mana that makes Rotorua special.
Fast forward to today, and LGP is a national powerhouse in live broadcasting, social media content, and event promotion—now reaching across the Pacific!
At LGP, manaakitanga is at the heart of everything. Clients don’t just get a service—they become part of the whānau. Their specialties include:
- Live Broadcasting & Livestreaming for kaupapa Māori events, sports, arts, and cultural showcases.
- Social Media Strategy to amplify voices and connect communities.
- Event Coverage for government initiatives, conferences, and more.
The team have proudly worked with Whakaata Māori, Sky TV, and international sports federations, delivering high-quality, reo-rich content that celebrates whakapapa, whenua, and taonga.
🏆 Awards? They’ve got a few!
- Innovation & Technology Award 2022 – Tompkins Wake Rotorua Business Awards
- Finalists in the Westpac Business Awards for three consecutive years
- Nominations for Māori Business Awards
The community is their backbone. Rotorua gave them the stories, the trust, and the platform to showcase local excellence. Every livestream, every broadcast is a tribute to the people who make the place their home.
What’s Next for LGP?
With support from Poutama, the team are excited they’re levelling up! It will help them:
✅ Invest in Outside Broadcast (OB) technology—a game-changer for delivering more kaupapa Māori content.
✅ Expand their studio capabilities at Te Whare Piringa, including hosting E-Sports events for rangatahi.
✅ Grow their social media presence and continue repping Aotearoa on the global stage.
Their Guiding Principle
“If you can’t show it to your Kuia or Koroua, don’t film it.”
This value anchors everything they do. Being Māori isn’t just part of their identity—it’s the foundation of their mahi. From Arikitanga to Whanaungatanga, their work reflects the leadership and integrity of their tīpuna.
