Last week, Aotearoa New Zealand and the United Kingdom signed the NZ-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Concluding this Agreement is a significant achievement for Māori exporters, opening market access opportunities into the world’s fifth largest economy.  The agreement enables exporters to compete on a level playing field with other countries that already have FTAs with the UK.

The Agreement contains the broadest set of outcomes for Māori that Aotearoa has negotiated in a FTA – recognising the significant interests Māori had in this Agreement, and the unique relationship with the British Crown as an original signatory to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The Agreement contains a dedicated Māori Trade and Economic Cooperation chapter, recognising strong Māori interests in participating in and shaping trade approaches and outcomes that affect them.
