Nick Smith – Ngāti Kahungunu
Chur Bol BBQ was started by Nick Smith in 2022 initially as a food cart business. They provide catering for special occasions and they attend festivals and concerts selling their low and slow food products.
Within a short period of time, they moved into the retail market and have recently launched their ready to use (boil in a bag), low and slow smoked meats range in ready to use vacuum pack bags. These products offer the user a convenient high quality product ready in just 15 mins.
Based in Nelson, this has helped contribute to their success as Whakatū is seen as a food hub. There are many other successful New Zealand food businesses such as Pic’s Peanut Butter, Proper Crisps and Chia Sisters NZ to name a few.
Chur Bol is poised to become a renowned provider of ready-to-go, low and slow food products, embodying a culture deeply rooted in fun, adventure, and resilience. Producing products, crafted with care, will be readily available to consumers in supermarkets, restaurants, and cafes across New Zealand.
At the heart of Chur Bol is a close-knit community, guided by values such as kindness, adventurous spirit, fun, resilience, and a commitment to family. This vibrant culture flows through every aspect of operations, making Chur Bol not only a commercial success but also a genuinely exciting and enjoyable brand.
Poutama is proud to have supported Chur Bol with growth investment funding to purchase new equipment and website development. Nick says, “It’s so good to get the support, we have been able to fund our website development to get our e-commerce site up and running so we are accessible to all kiwis.”
“We have also been able to purchase a brand new smoker, which will really help with scaling up and supplying more retail customers. We are super grateful to Poutama for all the support on helping our little company grow!”
The Chur Bol team are super proud of their little business’s growth over the last 12 months. Nick says, “to go from a little food cart to now stocking our products in supermarkets is pretty amazing. It just goes to show the demand for quick, convenient and tasty food products.”
