Todd Couper – Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine, Ngāti Pāhauwera

Todd Couper is a contemporary Māori artist with 27 years of experience and a long-time client of Poutama.  His work embodies the traditional teachings of whakairo (Māori carving), combined with a contemporary lens.

Todd is excited to announce the release of his 2025 calendar, a collection that tells the story of his journey as a full-time artist in the ancient art of whakairo.

“This calendar is an invitation into my world of carving, where each image captures stories of mana (spiritual authority), whakapapa (genealogy), and the mauri (life essence) within each piece,” says Todd.

“This calendar offers a glimpse into works held in collections worldwide.  As a limited-edition release, it’s my way of making Māori art more accessible and bringing our cultural stories into your home.”

Todd says, “Growing up in Wairoa, I never imagined that my passion for drawing and carving would lead me to exhibit on the global stage.  I am beyond grateful to share this work with you all.  Each piece in this calendar is crafted to honour our Māori heritage and the timeless values that shape us.”

Todd believes that art is a powerful language—it speaks of identity, resilience, and the silent corners of the heart.  “Each carving I create holds my wairua (spirit), forged from years of dedication, mentorship, and the enduring influence of my iwi.”

“This calendar allows me to share that journey with you, connecting us through the beauty of our shared heritage.”
