Douglas Williams – Ngāti Maru
From humble beginnings in Pukekohe to becoming a trusted name across the North Island, Williams Drainage and Civil Limited is a story of grit, growth, and giving back.
Douglas Williams, the driving force behind the business, hails from the beautiful Thames/Coromandel region and proudly affiliates with Ngāti Maru (Hauraki). Now based in Pukekohe, Douglas brings over 25 years of experience in drainage and construction to the table.
Established nearly eight years ago, Williams Drainage and Civil has grown from a tight-knit team of three (plus Toni in the office!) to a crew of 16 skilled professionals. Specialising in civil drainage, large-scale subdivisions, and new infrastructure projects – like stormwater and sewer systems, the company has played a key role in shaping South Auckland’s rapidly developing landscape.
South Auckland’s construction boom has been a major catalyst for the company’s success. But when the market slowed, Williams Drainage didn’t miss a beat—expanding their services to North Auckland, Tauranga, Whitianga, Whangārei, and Hamilton.
Thanks to support from Poutama, the business is now poised to grow even further, with plans to form an additional drainage crew. Douglas says “This funding is more than just financial—it’s a vote of confidence in a business that’s deeply rooted in Māori values.”
“Being Māori isn’t just a background detail—it’s central to how Williams Drainage operates. The company proudly employs predominantly Māori and Pasifika staff, honours tikanga, and treats its team like whānau. Apprenticeships, pastoral care, and career development are all part of the package.
