Tim Smith – Ngāti Ranginui
Nest Architectural Design provides a comprehensive design service for residential homes, both new builds and alterations to existing buildings.
Based in Feilding they work primarily on mid-range properties in the Manawatū-Whanganui region. Their service spans from initial concept design through to the completion of working drawings to obtaining Building Consent.
Tim Smith established nest in August 2015. He had been working as an architectural designer for 2 years, following 10 years working as a builder. Nest emerged from the recognition that Tim’s combination of practical construction and design experience was uncommon among architects. This meant that he was more aware of realities of the building process and industry.
This provides a huge advantage to Nest and is an attractive marketing angle for the business, as well as his networks in the local construction industry offered a good opportunity for obtaining clients.
For the first 2 years, Tim was only able to work part-time in Nest due to supporting his young family. Since 2017 he has been focusing on growing and developing the business and has taken on 2 new full-time designers. He also moved out of his home office to a premise in the centre of Feilding.
There are growing numbers of houses needing to be constructed both nationally and locally in order to keep up with demand. Locally there has been relatively little movement in the number or size of design companies in the last few years that provide Nest with lots of opportunities.
Nest’s clients appreciate Tim’s approachable manner, practical understanding of construction and the wider building process. He also comes with up-to-date technical knowledge of different construction methods and materials.
